Horizon Builders and Muse Architects win 2010 Residential Design Award from Washingtonian Magazine
CROFTON, MD – June 10, 2010 – Horizon Builders and Muse Architects today announced that the firms have jointly been awarded a Residential Design Award by Washingtonian Magazine. The two companies worked together in the extensive renovation project of a 1930s house in Washington. Horizon Builders is a contracting firm specializing in the construction of architect-designed, custom homes in the mid-Atlantic region. Muse Architects is a Bethesda, Maryland-based architecture firm with extensive experience in residential, institutional, commercial, and urban design projects, and expertise in sustainable design for all project types.

- The competition was open to registered architects of DC area houses and second homes owned by Washingtonians and drew 112 entries. The varied submissions ranged from ambitious renovations to urban-infill projects to light-filled modern designs.
- On the jury were Anne Fairfax, partner in Fairfax & Sammons Architecture in New York City; Frank Harmon, head of his own firm in Raleigh, North Carolina; and Richard Munday, principal at Newman Architects in New Haven, Connecticut.
- Contractor Horizon Builders and architectural firm Muse Architects won a Residential Design Award for the renovation of a 1930s house located on a one-acre lot in Washington, D.C.
- The family commissioned the renovation to expand the small home to include an in-law suite, a room for foreign exchange students and a separate area for live-in staff. The home’s focal point is a two-story courtyard of shared living and entertainment space.
- This recent award from Washingtonian follows a successful year in which Horizon Builders won Custom Home magazine’s 2009 Builder of the Year and was inducted into BUILDER magazine’s Wm. S. Marvin Hall of Fame for Design Excellence.
- In 2008, Muse Architects was also inducted into BUILDER magazine’s Wm. S. Marvin Hall of Fame for Design Excellence.
The project is featured in the June 2010 edition of Washingtonian Magazine and is entitled “Bold and Beautiful.”
