Horizon Builders and Cunningham | Quill Architects Win 2009 Chapter Design Award from the American Institute of Architects DC Chapter

CROFTON, MD – January 21, 2010 – Horizon Builders and Cunningham | Quill Architects today announced that the companies have jointly won a 2009 Chapter Design Award from the American Institute of Architects (AIA) DC Chapter in the Historic Resources category. The companies worked as a team to design and build the award-winning, single-family home renovation on the Evermay Estate in Georgetown, which dates back to the 19th Century and is one of the largest and most historic properties in the region. Horizon Builders is a firm specializing in the construction of architect-designed, custom homes in the mid-Atlantic region. Cunningham | Quill Architects is a Washington, D.C.-based architectural firm that utilizes an approach tailored to the unique demands of every project, which include a variety of residential, commercial and historical projects.

Core News Facts

  • The Washington Chapter/AIA Awards Program recognizes excellence in the categories of architecture, interior architecture, historic resources and sustainability. The program is intended to demonstrate the value of good design and to illustrate the wide variety of services performed by architects.
  • The renovation, named Mother & Child by the architect, won in the category of Historic Resources. This category is defined by AIA|DC to include pure preservation or restoration, adaptive reuse of existing structures whose overall architectural character is maintained, sympathetic additions to historic structures, and replication or reconstruction of damaged or destroyed structures or elements thereof.
  • The client commissioned the renovation of the 1893 home, which represents one of the earliest examples of colonial revival in Washington, because the structure had been compromised in the 1960s with a remodeled front exterior and removal of the widow’s walk. Cunningham | Quill and Horizon were brought in to reinstate the home’s original historic character and accomplished this goal by restoring the original windows, rebuilding the front porch and reestablishing the home’s connection to the street with landscaping.
  • This Chapter Design Award honor rounds out a successful 2009 in which Horizon Builders won Custom Home magazine’s 2009 Builder of the Year and was inducted into BUILDER magazine’s Wm. S. Marvin Hall of Fame for Design Excellence.
  • In 2009, Cunningham | Quill Architects was honored twice by the AIA|DC Chapter including a Merit Award and an Award of Honor. In addition, the firm received an Award of Merit and a Citation Award from the AIA Potomac Valley Chapter.
  • The interior design of Mother & Child was completed by Thomas Pheasant.
