Tip #2: A Cistern — putting an old technology to a modern use

A new twist on a very old concept, cisterns — or more commonly know as rain barrels — are becoming more prevalent for use in channeling rain and providing irrigation options. Above ground gravity flow systems are the most efficient compared to large, buried storage tanks that need electricity to pump water for landscape irrigation. Although while very practical, most of our clients find above ground systems to be an eyesore and detract from the exterior look of their property. But where landscaping designs can benefit from a free water source, large buried storage tanks make sense. Since rain water is generally clear and free of harmful bacteria, it can be safely stored until needed without concern of heath risks, whereas grey water is a different matter and must be treated and filtered before releasing into or onto outdoor landscaping or drain fields. On some of our clients’ home sites, 5,000 to 50,000 gallon tanks were buried underground so the homeowner could pump stored water to the irrigation system as needed.

In areas of the country where clean water comes at a premium, any way to save and store clean water is a desirable addition to a sustainable home. In the mid-Atlantic region, reducing the impact of stormwater runoff is an added benefit to the environment. When weighing the benefits for your clients, all of these factors should be taken into consideration.
